Sunstone gets its beautiful sparkling or glittering appearance from tiny reflective mineral inclusions—often copper or other minerals—within the feldspar.

This optical effect is called aventurescence, and when the stone is moved in the light, those inclusions can create flashes that look almost like tiny rays of sunlight trapped inside the crystal.

Sunstone is also part of the feldspar family, the same broad mineral family that includes Moonstone.
