Shungite is a fascinating carbon-rich mineraloid that is primarily found in the Republic of Karelia in northwestern Russia.

One of its most interesting characteristics is its unusually high carbon content. Some varieties contain very high percentages of carbon and may have a distinctive silvery-black or almost metallic appearance.

Shungite is also notable because some samples contain fullerenes, a naturally occurring form of carbon made up of carbon atoms arranged into cage-like structures.
