Bloodstone gets its distinctive appearance from red or reddish-brown inclusions of iron oxides scattered throughout its dark green/gray chalcedony base.

Historically, the red spots were sometimes believed to represent drops of blood, which contributed to the stone's name and many of its traditional associations with courage, vitality, strength, and purification.

The name heliotrope comes from the Greek words helios (sun) and tropos (turning), referring to an ancient belief that the stone could influence the appearance of the sun or cause reflected sunlight to appear reddish.
